Student Youth Hostels

When students are traveling around the world, many are traveling on a very tight budget. Because traditional hotels can be very expensive and you’ll end up reluctantly paying for all kinds of amenities that you won’t need, many young people find themselves staying in youth hostels instead. Hostels are much cheaper than hotels; you’re essentially paying for a bed and a place to store your luggage. However, finding cheap, convenient, good quality hostels can be difficult without the right resources. Usually, talking to locals or people who travel often is the best way to find a convenient youth hostel option. However, there are a number of online hostel search tools that can make the process much easier. These services have review and rating sections, price options, and much more. To help you start your search, we’ve gathered a few websites that allow you to explore hostel options.

Why Hostels?

Youth hostels are a great way to see the world, but why are they so great? Here are just a few reasons:

Cost

Hostels are significantly cheaper than traditional hotels, saving you money so that you’ll have a larger spending budget, allowing you to see more, eat better, and feel generally more comfortable. The price of Hostels can vary greatly depending on a number of factors; for a single bed in a dorm room, you can end up paying anywhere from a few cents to a hundred dollars. Generally, in regions like Southeast Asia, Central America, and Eastern Europe, you’ll be able to find dorm beds for just a few dollars. You’ll be able to find shared dorms starting at around $5 a night, and private rooms at around $15 a night. In Australia, North America, and Western Europe, you will likely find the highest prices, with dorms starting around $20 a night, and private rooms maxing out at about $100 a night. Anywhere else, you’ll find that the prices tend to stay within the range of these two extremes. For the most part, regardless of where you are in the world, you’ll likely be able to find a bed in a hostel for less than $20. However, discounts are common among travelers; you’ll likely be able to find various deals by using services like Hostelworld. As most hostels are for the budget conscious traveler, you will find that local tour operators will often give special deals for those staying there to do tours, saving you even more money!

New Friends

Hostels provide you with an excellent opportunity to meet fellow travelers. Since when staying at a hostel you will likely be sleeping in a room with other people, getting to know these people feels totally natural. Hostels often have common areas, kitchens, and other places to get to know your roommates, and, often, travelers will find their stay at their hostel to be the most fun part of their trip. As a young person, you’ll most likely run into someone around your age from another part of the world, and sharing a fun night or two in a new place with this person can be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever experience. You are typically allowed to enter and leave the hostel throughout the night as much as you want, but if you have roommates staying with you who prefer not to go out, you may want to get back relatively early, or be as quiet as possible. If you are a lone traveler, staying in hostels is one of the easiest ways to meet new friends and experience new cultures.

Location

You will often find that hostels are in very central locations, close to public transportation and city centers, or in unique locations that may attract tourists, such as hostels located in castles in Germany, in monasteries in Italy, or in trees or caves in Turkey. If you’re planning a trip and hoping to find a hostel in a unique or convenient location in your destination, check out our Student Youth Hostel Search Page for information on various hostel booking resources.
