Founded in 1972 on the ideals of academic excellence and service, George Mason University is located in Fairfax, Virginia, just 45 minutes from Washington, DC, and is Virginia's largest public research university. At GMU, students can pick courses and majors from 10 different colleges and schools. Not only do these colleges cover all academic areas, they also offer students the opportunity to craft their own course of study. GMU academics are fitting for both the student who knows what they’re passionate about, knows what they want to study and what degree they want to get, and doesn't feel the need to spend time taking classes that don’t apply to their major, and for the student who isn’t sure and wants to explore their options. Being just minutes away from Washington DC, the capital of the United States, there are endless work-study opportunities to help students understand what life is like in a certain industry. Resources Overview
George Mason University takes steps to make sure that their students feel encouraged, supported, and motivated during the college process. Success coaches and academic advisors are sometimes crucial to a student’s success; from connecting students to campus resources to helping students set and achieve personal, academic, and career goals, the support staff at George Mason play an integral role in student development.
Academic Advisors
As a George Mason student commits to a major or minor, they are assigned an academic advisor from their college. GMU encourages students to meet with these advisors regularly to talk about academic programs, goals, course scheduling, and career plans. Each department establishes its own advising process so the advisors have a thorough understanding of common struggles within each discipline.
Office of International Programs
Global Education
Students at GMU have access to study abroad programs that can give them immersive, rewarding cultural experiences all around the globe. These programs vary in length, academic concentration, and location. Students can discover new cultures, deeply enhance their language skills, and just simply travel, all while earning credits. Options available to students include shorter, faculty-led courses and intensive language programs, semester or year-long George Mason-sponsored programs, and international internship opportunities. The Global Education Office also offers different forms of advising related to studying abroad.
INTO George Mason
GMU offers a year-one program for international students that is designed to integrate them into the language, culture, and customs, both social and academic, of the United States and GMU in general. The program is designed to give international students the skills and confidence to excel as much as possible in their personal, academic, and professional lives. GMU offers conditional admission to international students with little knowledge of the English language. Upon completion of the year-one English language program, these students are guaranteed direct admission into the university.
Office of International Programs and Services
The GMU Office of International Programs and Services provides international students with advising and assistance about both cultural and procedural topics. From information and processes related to Visas and nonimmigrant status to practical assistance for students with questions about anything related to US life and culture, OIPS advisors make sure that they are able to address the concerns of all international students with care and attention. The office conducts an orientation program for new students from abroad, along with various social and cultural programs during the fall and spring semesters. In addition to all this, the office leads school-wide efforts to internationalize campus life for all members of the George Mason community through outreach and programs designed to connect people from different cultures in meaningful ways.
Campus
More than 6,000 of the 37,000 students at GMU are housed at the main campus in Fairfax. This campus sits on 677 acres of wooded land, and is only 25 minutes away from downtown Washington DC. As enrollment continues to rise, construction on campus continues to grow as well. In 2018, the Peterson Family Health Sciences Halls was opened, and became the new home of the College of Health and Human Services.

Residence halls on campus include traditional rooms, suites, and apartments, all of which have free laundry, Wi-Fi, cable, and other amenities, along with service desks that are staffed 24/7.
Campus Amenities
There are three dining halls on campus, some of which are open 24 hours. The campus also contains a Recreation and Athletic Complex that has three gyms, racquetball courts, squash courts, a two-story fitness gallery, and an Aquatics and Fitness Center with an Olympic-size pool and a smaller pool for recreational swimming. In addition, the campus has an outdoor intramural sports club, an indoor facility for things like billiards, foosball, and video games, a massive library, and a network of collaboration spaces for students working overtime to bring their entrepreneurial ideas to life.
