Janet Ray from Providence College
As a native of Barbados, the opportunity to come to the United States as an international student has helped her connect easily with international students. She can relate and understand in greater depth their academic and social experiences as well as their anxieties in the process of exploring and navigating the college experience in the United States.
She works at Providence College, a Roman Catholic, four-year, liberal arts college located on 105 acres in Providence, Rhode Island. Providence College was founded in 1917 and is the only college or university in the United States founded by and conducted under the auspices of the Dominican Friars and serves 4.874 undergraduate and graduate students. U.S. News and World Report has ranked Providence College as one of the top regional colleges and universities in the North for fourteen consecutive years, currently standing at #1 in in the 2017 ranking of Best Colleges – Regional Universities – North."
Janet’s scope of work includes immigration expertise while providing accurate information to international students, monitoring and tracking student immigration status, and maintaining accurate records for the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) overseen by the Department of Homeland Security. She also provides support for international and exchange students and scholars to help them acclimate to Providence College and understand the resources available to them on and off-campus.
She truly enjoy working with international students. It gives her great satisfaction to see them grow in their college life, make friends and most of all to see them succeed. She loves hearing about their respective lives as well as their family life back home and hopes that they stay in touch even after they have graduated from college.
Her passion for working with international students has led her to earn a Doctorate in Higher Education, Education Leader with a strong concentration on international students attending college in the U.S. Janet resides in Smithfield, RI with her husband and kids and keeps quite busy attending her son’s many athletic events.
