Congratulations to Salman I Sayyed for «Community of 3 Mothers»
We look forward to celebrating International Education Week every year not only because we love to celebrate international students, educators and advocates but also because we get to announce the winners of our annual Travel Video Contest. In our 16th year of presenting the contest, we wanted to highlight the importance of community and its impact on international students. For over a year, many of us have been spending a lot of time alone while we continue to navigate through a global pandemic. Which made us think that it would be the perfect time to dedicate the contest to those who have had a big hand in supporting international students. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each and every one of our entrants’ stories. Now more than ever, it’s apparent that having a community that you can turn to provide unconditional support is essential. This year’s participants each offered their interpretation of the theme: how "community" has had an impact or influence on their international education pursuit.
We received 70 eligible entries this year which made choosing only 12 finalists a tough task. Although we could only choose 12 finalists, each of our entrants’ videos touched our hearts so we can only imagine how challenging it was for our judges to pick our final three winners.
Although a difficult task, our judges have conveyed their top picks and we’re pleased to announce the winners:
$4,000 Grand Prize Winner: “Community of 3 Mothers” by Salman I Sayyed Salman’s heartfelt story about the three motherly figures in his life certainly tugged at our heartstrings. His love and appreciation for those who have supported him is inspirational. He is currently an MBA student at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, living with his third mother, Beth, and her family. Although he has faced many hardships throughout his life, including being homeless for a lot of his childhood, we are confident that he will overcome adversity to complete his MBA and reach his goal of starting his own company to support those who are living through homelessness in India. Great work, Salman!
$500 Second Place Winner: “Listen to Your Inner Voice” by Yuhang Liu
$250 Third Place Winner: “Come Walk a Mile in My Community's Shoes” by Gloria Dolo
$1,000 Viewers’ Choice Winner: “My Community Is My Support System” by Omowunmi Fatogun
Thank you again to all our entrants and finalists this year. We look forward to receiving your entries next year and hope you'll encourage other students to enter as well!
