In the last 11 years, a study discovered that of the 1100 films created, only 4% were directed by women, equating to 22 male directors hired for every woman director. They also concluded that of the 43 female directors who made movies from 2007 to 2017, only 2 were Asians. This shows that women and ethnic minority film-makers are underrepresented in today’s age. As an Asian, prioritization of the creative industry is not as privileged as in western countries. This is in fact evident in Brunei as their only TV broadcaster, Radio Television Brunei (RTB), featured government campaigns, religious, education and drama programs up to today. My dedication towards storytelling has persevered me to pursue a Masters in Documentary filmmaking. Documentary filmmaking provides an opportunity to inspire conversation and even social movements, triggering the mind to be aware of the current issues within society and I aim to change the industry mindset in Brunei after my program ends. - Fiqah Rahman, Brunei
