Heidi White is the Director of International Student Services and Study Abroad at Durham Technical Community College in Durham, NC. She is responsible for assisting all non-US citizen students in the admissions process, visa advising, evaluation of international credentials and providing information on access to higher education for local immigrant communities. Heidi also directs the study abroad programs for Durham Tech students and community members. After graduating from Appalachian State University with a degree in Cultural Anthropology and a minor in Women’s Studies, she worked abroad in China teaching English at all many different institutions and businesses and working with language schools to recruit native English speakers to teach in China. When Heidi returned to the US, she continued teaching ESL and helping with programming in community colleges, intensive language schools and in an elementary school, while she pursued her Master’s degree in International Studies at North Carolina State University.
Heidi worked for several years at UNC-Chapel Hill in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services as the international advisor for scholars and students and eventually as the SEVIS Compliance Officer. And from 2006-2012 Heidi worked at Elon University in the Isabella Cannon Centre for International Studies and eventually became the Director of Study Abroad. While there she helped manage, market, and grow the nationally-ranked study abroad programs, assisted in spearheading new international strategies, and implemented new technologies to advance data management. She also designed and taught courses on helping students identify the skills gained on international experiences and gave them tools to research and pursue international opportunities after graduation.
